Many of us know that acupuncture can be used for pain management, but did you know it also can be used for emotional wellbeing, hormonal balance, immune support, cardiovascular support and chronic inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. These are just a few of the internal conditions that acupuncture can address.
Acupuncture originates from China and dates back over 4,000 years. It is the original preventative medicine. In ancient times each village had a doctor whose job was to keep the village well. The doctor to the emperor’s life depended on his ability to keep the emperor strong and vital. A classic saying from the Nei Jing (an ancient Chinese text) says you don’t dig a well once you are already thirsty.
Today in acupuncture clinics we treat both acute and chronic diseases with a preventative approach as well. The regular use of acupuncture can enhance the immune system, increase endorphins (feel good chemicals in our bodies) and decrease pain and increase mobility.
Acute conditions come on fast and leave fast. Colds and flu’s are a good example of this or acute neck ache due to strain. Acute conditions can be relieved by the use of acupuncture within 1-3 treatment sessions.
Chronic conditions are long term conditions that may come and go and are often aggravated by overuse or stress. Fibromyalgia is a good example of this. It is not always actively expressing itself but after a poor night of sleep or exposure to cold weather it gets aggravated. These conditions are best supported by regular acupuncture treatment sessions 1-2 times a month. People find that regular use of acupuncture decreases their flare ups and the need for medications used for the severe flare ups.
Preventative acupuncture (the emperors’ medicine) is used to keep the patient well and functioning at optimal levels. Often the medicine is used monthly or quarterly to support body, mind and spirit. It is like a multivitamin treatment that covers our basic needs and aides in greater well being.
As an acupuncturist we evaluate the needs of the patient and recommend treatment according to those needs. Feel free to contact me with questions regarding how acupuncture may help you.
